Planning your first trip to Block Island? You’re in for a treat! With its charming New England character, sweeping ocean views, and unique local culture, Block Island is the kind of place where every corner feels like a discovery. To help you make the most of your adventure, we’ve rounded up 10 must-see spots that first-time visitors absolutely can’t miss.
1. Mohegan Bluffs
Towering 150-foot clay cliffs on the southern shore, Mohegan Bluffs offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Atlantic. A wooden staircase leads you down to a secluded beach—perfect for adventurers who don’t mind a little climb. Can’t handle the stairs? There is a look out from the top so you don’t have to miss the views of the cliffs and wind farm that powers the Island.
2. Southeast Lighthouse
A historic landmark built in 1875, the Southeast Lighthouse sits dramatically close to the bluffs. This National Historic Landmark is both beautiful and a great way to learn about the Island’s maritime history with its newly renovated museum space. Pro tip: Stop at the Southeast Light Delights food truck for the best lobster roll on Block Island!
3. Crescent Beach
If you only visit one beach, make it Crescent Beach. Stretching nearly three miles, this sandy shoreline is ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and soaking in those quintessential New England summer vibes. The pavilion at Fred Benson Town Beach is open all summer long with refreshments and rentals to make for the perfect beach day.
4. North Lighthouse & Sandy Point
At the opposite end of the Island, the North Light is a quieter, more rugged gem. The interior museum is open less frequently, but if you get to take a peak, there is so much to learn as there was once a lifesaving station at the north point that saved many from shipwreck. Keep going and take a walk to Sandy Point where seals often lounge during the cooler months.
5. Block Island Farmers Market
Love local flavors? Head to the Farmers Market, where you’ll find everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. It’s a great place to connect with the Island’s community spirit and take home an authentic piece of Block Island and those that make it everything it is. Some favorite vendors of ours are EmeD’s Art, Island Mist Natural Products, Block Island Tea, Littlefield Honey, and Block Island Coffee. (You get a little sampler of many of these when you stay at one of our rentals.)
6. Rodman’s Hollow
This 230-acre preserved nature reserve is a hiker’s dream. Known as the “Grand Canyon” of Block Island, Rodman’s Hollow is filled with trails, rare plants, and stunning views of the ocean. Keep an eye out for glass floats so that you can be one of the few that can say they found one of the orbs from the Glass Float Project.
7. Spring House Hotel
One of Block Island’s most iconic hotels and restaurants, the Spring House is known for its elegant dining, front lawn cocktails and music, and unbeatable ocean views. There are 4 main dinings areas, 2 indoor dining rooms, the outdoor patio and porch. In the shoulder and off seasons, the Barn is a cozy converted space to enjoy a candle lit dinner, or sit at the Chef’s bar and watch them cook.
8. Captain Nick’s
For a lively nightlife scene, Captain Nick’s is the spot. With indoor and outdoor bars, live music, and late night food, it’s the go-to for those who want both a little excitement and entertainment. Go on a Monday for disco night (beware of the glitter!). Enjoy a Sunday Funday with the Young Guns. Chill out for the Piano Show Every Wednesday. There is something for everyone on their weekly schedule.
9. Clay Head Trail & The Maze
This trail offers some of the best coastal walking paths on the Island. It is a quick walk from the parking lot to the beach and then there is a 2 mile trail along the cliffs so that you can see the ocean through the whole hike. If you are a little more adventurous, take one of the left hand turns down the paths known as “The Maze”. The winding trails lead to hidden coves and breathtaking bluff overlooks.
10. Downtown Old Harbor
Before you leave, take time to explore Old Harbor. With its charming Victorian architecture, local shops, and restaurants, it’s the perfect place for a stroll, a bite to eat, and a little shopping. Want to learn a little more history and stories about the Island? Take a history tour or ghost tour with Block Island Ghost Tours for an unforgettable experience and history lesson.
